Quite by chance we came across a (nearly) local maker of some delicious goats cheese.

The traditional log is a beautifully smooth creamy cheese.

The same cheese is also rolled in roasted coconut shells that are ground and mixed with rice flour. The whiter the log the more mature the cheese.

We are going to start off with just a few from the range to see if our regulars like them - we certainly do.

Unfortunately they do not sell my favourite chevre. Just three days old and turned out of the mould onto a soup plate, then double cream is poured over and black pepper ground on top. My French friends prefer very finely sliced garlic rather than black-pepper. But that is a bit too much ail for me! I can walk up the hill from my place and buy this set goats milk (one really cannot call it cheese) for a few Euro. Around my area of Martigny-le-Comte this is a traditional dinner course in addition to the regular cheeses.There are none of the year and older chevre that are just the most amazing concentrated flavour. But one can hope. But I guess if I could get them here then those from my local farm in Les Perriers would not be so special.

Wealdway, a small log coated in herbs or seeds. Very pretty, a useful dinner party cheese. 150g.

Wealden, a small very mature cheese with a heavy crust, rustic and powerful. 80g.

Little Garlic, a delightful small round cheese with lots of garlic and our own special blend of herbs. 120g.

Wealdway Mature, a truly gourmet cheese, coated in edible charcoal with a white felt. Quite strong and delicious. 220g.

Wealden, (soft) medium strength and creamy, ideal on the cheeseboard or for grilling, etc. 80g.

Banon, a fresh banon type cheese, coated in 'herbes de provence'. Gives a slight 'lemony' flavour. Best eaten quite fresh. 80g.

Deli Lunch platters trial runs great success

We thought we had better put together some of our deli lunch platters to find out if they could be all that our customers, and we, expect from the Old Forge.

It seems that they are!

Each is served with a glass of wine and chunk of bread from the delicatessen and unsalted butter.

Champagne is of course available for a small extra charge and naturally our guests can order a second glass of wine.

Introducing a new way to take lunch

From the Tuesday 14th April 2009 we will be offering our new style “Deli Platters” at The Old Forge Restaurant.

These cold platters will be available from Tuesday to Saturday and will comprise of a selection of Hams, Charcuterie, Cheeses and Seafood.

These selections will cost £7.50 per platter or £10.00 inclusive of a glass of white or red wine.

For those of you who require a more substantial lunch our classic Seasonal Lunch Menu and A La Carte menu will still be available on Thursday and Friday in addition to the above.

Raised pies coming back.

Tomorrow the pork pies will be back after an absence of some weeks.

No one knows where they went. Perhaps they are migratory. But never mind. Absence makes the taste-buds grow fonder.

They are made with the traditional hot-water paste and are packed with flavour and meats inside the crispy crust.

Thursdays are Pie Days!

In fact pies from the The Real Pie Company are delivered at least twice a week.
But Thursday is the day these great pies go out of date.
So guess who gets to eat them- yep. US.
We've found that everyone seems to be around for Thursday staff lunches nowadays.

Not that we can be too surprised. These traditional pies are a regular seller in the deli. and we all have our favourites.
Mine I think are the Cornish Pasties; but they are all good. The fillings vary from great to excellent but the pasty for all the pies is quite wonderful. And I state this as an ex-pastry basher myself.

My ex used to say that put anything in pastry and serve it with either custard or gravy and any man will be happy. So come on ladies - try a pie from The Real Pie Company as presented by The Old Forge Deli.

'How about a shot of expresso to start your day or a hot fresh coffee to take away?' - Annie

Our regular know that we grind coffee to order but we have now added a rather clever coffee machine to the deli equipment.

So now our morning customer can sip an expresso from one of our collection of feature expresso coffee cups or order a full sized coffee to take away.

The beans we use will change every day or so from this selection -

Pancakes flippin' wonderful!

Thanks to everyone who supported Cathy and Rene at the Pulborough Village Hall this last Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday pancakes were a great success. More than 700 pancakes served and about £1200.00 to each of the charitable causes, St. Barnabas in Worthing and MacMillan Cancer Care in West Sussex.

What is it about pancakes?

They are just a bit of egg, flour and perhaps a milk and water mix beaten into a submissive batter. Aren't they?

Cathy will be making pancakes at Pulborough in aid of the St. Barnabas Hospice in Worthing.

Savoury and sweet pancakes, plus music, plus raffle on the 24th February.

No pancakes in the deli but we do have traditionally ground and organic flours.

Garlic rules OK!

Garlic is said to have a number of properties.

Here's our list......

Anti-viral
Anti-bacterial
Anti-Vampire
Anti-fungal
Good for digestive or bowel disorders
Relieves insect stings
May prevent heart attacks
Anti-social - unless your partner has partaken of the same dish
Believed to lower the incidence of colonic and other cancers.

Now while we cannot vouch for any of these claims we can tell you that the smoked garlic we stock is absolutely great in all kinds of dishes.

Some other garlic related stuff.

Keep a small wooden chopping board just for garlic and onions.

There are a number of methods to prepare garlic to add to a dish.

What's your favourite? Add as a Comment below.

Smack the clove with the flat of a knife, remove the skin and chop finely.
Do the above and then chop with a little salt
Peel the whole clove and slice just as thinly as possible and then gently 'sweat' in a little oil.
Make a garlic oil with a good quality vegetable oil. Lightly crush the clove and put in the bottle, top up with oil and leave for some weeks in a cool and dark place.
For Filipino stlye dishes, whichj mean smost of them, chop finely without the salt and then fry until brown. Make sure you have the kitchen extractor fan running and a chef's candle ready to light!

The Ryvita mix is made with crushed ice - not a lot of people know that.

Nor did we until Mr Roberts came back from a 2 day jolly in Finland that included a visit to the Finn Crisp factory.

That's how they get the voids in the Ryvita crackers. Clever stuff.

We don't sell Ryvita but do sell others from the range produced by Finn Crisp.

Cheaper than Tesco!

We sell the great Finn Crisp range at less than any Tesco store.

Finn Crisp are the largest and probably the best makers of these breads in the world.

Crisp breads are more popular than bread in Finland and most Scandinavian countries; and becoming one of our best selling lines in the deli.

The also make the Ryvita range.
